A female Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeds in the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary in Asheville, North Carolina. Named Aubrie in honor of Aubrie McGuffey who led me to the sanctuary.
During a casual conversation with my fellow photographer friend, Aubrie McGuffey, she shared with me her experiences of spotting some amazing birds in the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary along Merrimon Avenue in Asheville, North Carolina. That was all it took, a few quick stories to have me looking up the sanctuary on Google maps.
Finally, over the Labor Day weekend in early September 2021, I was able to visit the sanctuary and photograph a Ruby-throated Hummingbird feeding from a Jewelweed blossom. This wasn't the only image I was able to capture but it was one of my favorites. I then named it "Aubrie" in honor of Aubrie McGuffey who had suggested the location to me.
You may be wondering why this green hummingbird is called a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, it is because this is a female and the males have a patch of ruby-colored feathers under their heads giving the bird its name.
