A Bull Elk stands in a frost-covered Smoky Mountain Valley in mid-December.
Photographer's Journal (December 18, 2022):
After all the colors of autumn fade away into winter, most visitors to the Northern National Parks disappear with them. I completely understand how cold temperatures, snow, and frost make most of us want to stay inside. However, as cold as my toes and fingers get, I know there is amazing beauty painted by God waiting for my lens to capture. That thought drove me to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to capture winter images of my favorite subject, elk.
After a morning of capturing several images, I came across this bull elk and his harem grazing in a frosted field just touched by the morning sun. I quickly set myself up and started to capture his portrait, which you see now.
