I headed into Cataloochee Valley in Great Smoky Mountains National Park with one goal in mind, photographing elk.
I was watching the fields and forest edges, hoping to catch a bull elk moving through the morning light. But as is so often the case in nature, God had something completely different waiting for me.
Along the forest floor, I spotted a ruffed grouse out for a quiet stroll.
I quickly changed plans and lowered myself to the ground ahead of the bird. I wanted to photograph it from its level, creating a more intimate view of this beautiful creature moving through the woods.
Then came the challenge.
I had to stay completely still.
The grouse continued walking toward me while I watched through the viewfinder, waiting for the perfect moment.
And that is when my fall allergies decided to make an appearance.
I felt a powerful sneeze building.
My nose was literally about to blow the shot.
I held my breath and fought it with everything I had, trying not to move while the grouse stepped closer.
Then, for just a moment, the bird stopped, lifted its head, and gave me exactly the image I had been waiting for.
Click.
I got it.
Seconds later, I sneezed loudly and sent the grouse disappearing into the forest.
I could not help but laugh.
I had traveled into the Smokies looking for elk, but instead I came home with something I never expected.
That is one of the things I love most about nature photography. You can plan the destination, the subject, and the shot, but some of the most beautiful moments are the ones you never see coming.
By the grace of God, my nose held out just long enough.
And now I can share this rare little moment of God's artistry with you.
