The Photo That Almost Didn’t Happen (But Wow!)
Jun 17, 2025

I had set out to photograph the rhododendron bloom along the Blue Ridge Parkway, chasing that perfect blend of light and life that only the mountains can offer. The day had been long—full of winding turns, misty overlooks, and vibrant bursts of pinks and purples tucked into the lush green. I could smell the pine-sweetened breeze, taste the cool mountain air, and hear the soft hum of insects as the sun dipped low.
But time wasn’t on my side. Night was falling, and with it came that familiar pull back toward home. As I cruised down the Parkway, a nagging feeling stirred—like the story wasn’t finished yet. I needed one more photo, just one, or I’d leave with the ache of something undone.
Then I saw it.
A blaze of orange bloom bursting against the shadowy forest, lit by the last golden rays of the setting sun. I slammed the brakes, threw the truck into park, and jumped out with my camera. The light was fading fast—no time to think, just breathe and shoot.
That moment became Fire Ridge. The final frame of the day. A reminder that even when the light is almost gone, God still has one more masterpiece to share.
