Whispers of Winter: A Lighthouse Awakens at Folly Beach

My plan was simple—slip into Folly Beach before the summer crowds arrived, to capture her raw, unspoiled beauty beneath February’s pale sky. But simplicity often hides challenge, and nature was quick to remind me of her power.

The moment I stepped onto the beach, winter greeted me like an old rival. A sharp ocean mist struck my face, its icy spray needling into my skin. The air was thick with salt, the kind that stings your lips and leaves a faint metallic taste on your tongue. The rhythmic crash of waves against the shore provided a constant drumbeat beneath the distant cries of gulls, their voices slicing through the chilled wind. Each gust whispered through the dunes, sending grains of sand swirling like tiny dancers across my path.

The damp sand clung to my boots, pulling me downward as though the earth itself wished to slow my pursuit. My jacket did little to shield me; the cold crept in through every gap, wrapping around my bones like frozen vines. I pulled my collar tight, pressing forward into the face of the wind, determined to reach my destination.

Ahead, standing in defiant solitude, was the Morris Island Lighthouse. It rose like a silent guardian from the sea, steadfast against the horizon. For a brief moment, I simply stood in awe, letting its timeless presence sink into my soul. This was the moment I had come for — yet the sky above offered no favor. A dull, heavy gray stretched across the heavens, indifferent and unyielding.

I carefully set up my equipment, each movement made clumsy by numb fingers that struggled to obey. My breath fogged in the frigid air as I adjusted the tripod, composed the frame, and waited. The wind howled louder, almost as if mocking my patience. Minutes stretched into what felt like hours. The cold gnawed at my resolve. Doubt whispered: “Maybe today is not the day. Maybe this isn’t worth it.”

But I stayed.

And then — as if in quiet reward for my endurance — the miracle unfolded.

The heavy gray sky began to soften. Subtle streaks of lavender appeared like timid brushstrokes across a blank canvas. Then, almost in a breath, the palette deepened — soft purples melting into vibrant pinks, peach tones glowing just above the horizon. The sea, now calm and glassy, mirrored the spectacle perfectly. The lighthouse stood at the center of this masterpiece, its reflection painting a perfect symmetry upon the water.

In that instant, I felt the presence of something far greater than myself — a divine artist at work. It was as if God had dipped His brush into the sky and said, “Here… this is for you.” The cold, the discomfort, the doubt — all of it melted away under the brilliance of that fleeting moment.

And now, I offer this image to you — not simply as a photograph, but as a window into the sacred beauty of creation. A glimpse of God's artistry, captured in the stillness of winter’s embrace.
